About the company

Our client is a fast-growing supply chain software company, founded in 2016 and now around a hundred people, that has raised roughly $85M from top-tier venture investors. It is rebuilding electronic data interchange — the decades-old plumbing that lets retailers, manufacturers and logistics providers exchange orders, invoices and shipment data — as a modern, AI-first platform, and more than four hundred companies now trade through it. The engineering culture is unusually direct about AI: senior engineers are expected to ship production work by directing coding agents, and to understand the distributed systems underneath well enough to review that output properly.

The role

You would own the design, delivery and reliability of complex parts of the platform — the services that move high volumes of trading-partner data between companies whose systems disagree about almost everything. That means leading the architecture of new solutions, taking the hardest problems, and setting the quality bar for the team, increasingly by directing AI coding agents and reviewing what they produce as rigorously as you would a teammate's pull request. Deep fundamentals matter more here, not less: the agents write the code, and you are the one who has to know whether the distributed messaging behind it is correct. Alongside the building, you would mentor engineers, shape technical direction, and partner closely with product and other teams. The role is scoped at senior level but can be levelled up to Staff for an outstanding candidate.

What you'll do

• Own the design, delivery and reliability of complex parts of a high-volume data integration platform
• Lead the architecture of new solutions and take on the problems nobody else has cracked
• Ship production work by directing AI coding agents, and review their output as rigorously as a teammate's
• Own the technical design of a major system or product area end-to-end
• Build and operate distributed messaging systems that move trading-partner data reliably between companies
• Set the quality bar for the team, and mentor other engineers
• Partner with product and cross-functional teams, and explain technical ideas to people who are not engineers

Tech stack

Node.js and TypeScript at an expert level, on top of distributed messaging infrastructure such as Kafka or RabbitMQ, with AI coding agents (Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot and similar) as a normal part of the daily workflow rather than an experiment. The messaging requirement is specific: the team wants engineers who have built and operated distributed messaging systems, not only consumed third-party APIs.

Compensation & logistics

• $190k–$225k base, plus competitive equity
• Fully remote from anywhere in the United States or Canada; the Pacific time zone is preferred
• The client cannot sponsor or transfer a visa, so you need to be legally authorized to work in the US and not need visa sponsorship or a visa transfer now or in the future, or already be authorized to work in Canada
• The role is scoped at senior level and can be levelled up to Staff for an outstanding candidate

• Interview process: a 30-minute culture screen with the VP of People that tests how you explain technical concepts to non-technical people, a 30-minute hiring manager screen, a three-hour technical screen covering live coding, system design and behavioural questions, then a 30-minute conversation with the CEO
