Who this is not for

  • Not for anyone outside the United States, or who needs visa sponsorship now or later.
  • Not for engineers without hands-on AWS and Terraform in production.

About the company

Our client is a venture-backed Series A company building an AI-powered planning platform for public-sector institutions. The product pairs its software with hands-on support from experienced specialists, so a customer can plan around its own priorities instead of around whatever the software allows. Customers across many US states already rely on it, and most of the team comes from the field its customers work in.

The role

This is the platform seat on a lean, distributed engineering team, reporting into an engineering organization led by one of the co-founders. You would own cloud infrastructure, test infrastructure, shared libraries, security and authentication, and CI/CD — identifying what is slowing the team down, deciding what to build, and delivering it end to end rather than waiting for a spec. It comes with real production ownership: observability, recovery practices and periodic on-call. Because the team is small, the same person also gets to set engineering practice through documentation, design and code review, and informal mentoring, and to make the technology calls that shape how the company builds software for the next few years.

What you'll do

  • Identify, prioritize, design and deliver platform work across cloud infrastructure, test infrastructure, shared libraries, security, authentication and CI/CD
  • Own production availability through observability, recovery practices and periodic on-call support
  • Partner with engineering stakeholders to remove pain points and improve delivery speed without giving up quality
  • Investigate and drive decisions on technologies that affect how the company builds and maintains software
  • Lead critical platform projects end to end — scope, tickets and delivery timelines included
  • Raise the team's capability through documentation, presentations, design and code reviews, and mentoring
  • Build full-stack solutions, including frontend work, when that is what the engineering team or the wider business needs

Nice to have

  • Experience in an industry that handles sensitive, regulated data
  • Experience in cybersecurity, authentication or security practices
  • Experience implementing observability, recovery practices and production on-call support
  • Ability to develop full-stack solutions, including frontend work, when needed
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and raising platform engineering practices across a team

Tech stack

AWS and Terraform for cloud infrastructure, MongoDB and Python for the application layer, and GitHub Actions and CI/CD tooling for delivery.

Compensation & logistics

  • $150k–$200k base plus competitive equity
  • Full-time and fully remote anywhere in the USA — the client has a preference for New York or Boston, but it is a preference, not a requirement
  • No visa sponsorship: candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States and not need visa sponsorship now or in the future
  • 3+ years of infrastructure and platform engineering experience
  • Periodic on-call as part of production ownership; no travel requirement was specified by the client
  • Four interview stages: a 30-minute phone screen, a 45-minute hiring manager interview, a roughly 2-hour asynchronous take-home, then a final round of a 60-minute project debrief, a 45-minute cross-functional interview and a 30-minute CEO interview
